Freedom struggles in season opener
9/23/2015 1:11:00 PM

Friday night marked the beginning of the 2015 football season for the Freedom Patriots and Winter Springs Bears. The rain and lightning cleared up just before game time to create a great atmosphere for the first edition of Friday Night Lights this season. On this night, things did not go the way our Patriots had hoped. The defense of the Patriots made many improvements after last week and held the Bear offense to just 10 points in the first half. The second half held much of the same in this defensive battle with the Patriots not giving up another touchdown until late in the 4th quarter. The final score of 23-7 was inflated because of that late TD. The Patriot offense struggled to get going all night. The Bears only gave up one touchdown on a run by Austin Davis in the third quarter that cut the score to 13-7. This drive was set up by a great return by Daequan Tate. Davis lead the offense with 8 rushes for 28 and a TD. As for the defense, Justin Marotta led the team with 6 tackles (4 solo). The defense made multiple stops on their side of the field to force the Bears to kick 3 field goals. This week will be another home game for the Patriots. They will welcome South Sumter (1-0) to campus for another 7:30pm matchup.
